soooo yesterday kicked ass. i love summer.
shayna had promised to take me and stefanie sailing like a gajillion times and it totally wasn't happening and we were actually fairly pissed, cause she has this boyfriend who is actually very nice and polite but totally monopolizes all of her time, which, come to think of it, seems to be a pattern in relationships. anyhoo. so i was practicing in picasso and shayna comes and says she and john (the bf) and john's friends are going canoeing, do we want to come. here, i would just like to note that i protested the interruption of my sacred practice time. briefly, that is. then i hauled ass back to tj, changed out of my knickers and knee highs and into shorts, a halter, and sandals (important to have these sartorial details, i know), and headed out with stef, shay, and john.
so, little side note. john is a local. all of this friends are locals. not only are they locals, they're the guys who work in food service, who we always used to make fun of and criticize as these hick traverse city high school dropouts who don't really know how read and resemble various farm animals to an alarming degree. so the four of us head outside, and here are these 3 other boys, shirtless, shoeless, this total like tom sawyer rugged outdoorsy look about them. totally hot. stef and i were just like, oh. my. god.
so the boys stop for beer, and then we head out to the manesty river, about 30 minutes away. the ride over, totally gorgeous. i swear, the whole state of michigan is like one big park. except for detroit. but anyway, on the way over the boys in the truck were being all crazy, climbing up and out of the car, onto the canoes behind, passing beer between the two cars, like shit that i would ordinarily think was just stupid and childish, but in the moment, i dunno, there was just this feeling of freedom i guess, the the sun was shining, blue skies overhead, we're just enjoying the energy of our youth. or something.
ok. so we get to the water, take a few pics, get in the canoes. the weather was perfect, warm but not too hot, slight breeze. so we're going along, talking, boys drinking, not a care in the world kind of thing. so this was a little too chill for the guys, so one of them jumps out of the canoe and then proceeds to tip mine. so we're all screaming and laughing and splashing, the water felt so nice. we swam to shore, but then there was this cliff wall thingy that everyone wanted to climb, so we swam over there, and it was all this slippery clay stuff, so we climb up but get covered in dirt and clay. but i was so proud of myself! no gear or anything, i climbed up this almost vertical wall of clay in the middle of the woods in michigan. yay! the view was gorgeous. then we had to get down, and end up sliding pretty much the whole way day and splashing into the water.
ok, so then the current was really strong but we had to swim across back to the canoes and i was having trouble cause uh, i pretty much suck at swimming. but the boys were totally looking out for us girls, and came out and helped me get across and then into a canoe. and they were totally nice about, no bullshit, like they were all about being wild and crazy but at the same time i felt taken care of.
we got home with all these scrapes and bruises, i feel so hard core. tonight stef and i are going swing dancing, tomorrow we're seeing amelie, wednesday night dr. boyle (aka big daddy b) is taking us to dinner. and i know i end with this a lot, but it's true. life is sweet.

i had forgotten how amazing it is here. how one day here is filled with more activity than a week, or a month even, anywhere else. i'm totally exhausted, but i'm so damn proud of my day.
woke up at 6:45 to tune harps before orchestra, which actually sucked ass because i was up until 1 learning how to swing dance from stefanie. so then 8:30 breakfast, back to the room to shower, 9:55 my first supervised practice time, with this super sweet little girl named sarah. it was so much fun, like i've totally never done anything like it, but i really am practically teaching her. she played through some pieces and i gave her tips and encouraged her. i dunno. it was just great.
so then lynne gave me another ridiculously long list of chores, so i worked on those until 12:30 lunch, then more chores, then stef and i went to dr. boyle's contemporary theory class. then more chores, then i got paid (yay!!!), which i totally wasn't expecting. and THEN i had my first lesson. oh. my. god. it was soooo wonderful. i swear, i've bearly been able to practice at all and i miss it so goddamn much. we went through all the music i'm going to learn while i'm here- houdy sonata, boldieu concerto, saint-saens violin/harp fantasie, bach largo- and then i played the bach, which i'd sorta been butchering, and she helped me SO MUCH, it was amazing, and unlike any other teacher i've known. and then i told her how much i love the bach cello suite, so she suggested i learn them, which i didn't think was a possibility on harp, but it is!!! so yay.
so then dinner at 5:30, harp meeting briefly on 6:30, and then stef and i got to sing the brahams requiem with the festival choir. it's open to anyone but it's mostly voice majors, so it sounds amazing, and i'll only get better. we have 6 rehearsals and then we perform it with the festival orchestra. like how amazing is that, to be able to just sing the brahams requiem in your spare time? pretty damn amazing, lemme tell ya.
oh god. so THEN we ran straight from rehearsal to a concert given by William Preucil, concertmaster of cleveland, and Eric Kim, principal cello with Cincinnati. actually i didn't love either of their sonatas, but then they played the mendelson (sp?) piano trio in D minor, which is soooo great, omigod.
so that was my day. kinda can't wait for tomorrow. :)

so i'm back at interlochen. kinda weird at first, like i haven't been here since graduation, which seems like such a long time ago, so much has happened since then. definitely had some mixed emotions going on. like, it's absolutely gorgeous, so happy to be back, totally can't wait for the campers to get here and to start taking lessons. but then also it's strange, like everything is familiar but also different, or at least i see it differently now. i dunno, hard to explain kinda. but also, i was kinda sorta freakin out about not really knowing anybody, and it suddenly dawned on me that actually i had my little group of people who of course i loved, but i didn't exactly blend with much of the interlochen crowd. in fact, they are in many ways my polar opposites. plus i have to wear knickers, which at first i found amusing, until i realized that they are the single most unattractive item of clothing known to man, like really, it's like hi, i'm a clown. in corduroy. yikes.
anyhoo. needless to say i've settled in a bit it all and am overall pretty pleased with my situation. there ARE quite a few people that i knew at the academy and am genuinely happy to see, more than i expected really, plus there are lots of new and interesting folks. my suitemate is a doll, and a flutist, and has actually already gathered some music for us to play together. the faculty orchestra doesn't need a harpist, but i might be able to play with TSO, which would kick all ass. also got an offer to teach a staff member's daughter. the campers don't get here until sunday, so until then i'm just sorta chillin, unloading/tuning/labeling harps, practicing. and stefanie is here!! just got in today, and it is so fucking great to see her. so. all is well as usual i suppose. g'night to all.

omigod, he's on RIGHT NOW. like as i'm writing this i'm watching his status on aim. omigod this is so ridiculous. like almost funny, but really just pathetic. yeah, ok, obsessed much? maybe just a little.
anyhoo. just got back from houston, sooo sleepy. i had such a good time tho, i'm so glad i went. like at first it was a little weird to see jude, but just a little, and then it was totally just wonderful. and then daddy called and told me that joyce had called, so we ended up going to dinner and then coffee and it was sooo nice, i swear i love that girl. we talked about all this confusing shit and i just felt better about it all, like whatever happens will be right. so.
alright, i'm gonna go im this boy, forever the object of my love and affection and yet somehow also the bane of my existence. not to melodramatic or anything. peace out.

oh lordy, i'm just a mess. i'm supposed to go to houston but i haven't heard from judith so i'm totally having second thoughts. but i need to pick up my bedding for interlochen, which i left there like the dum bass that i am. speaking of which, i'm just now beginning to realize the full extent of my committment there, which includes but is not limited to knickers, knee highs, and mary janes, which is funny because i once dressed up like a school girl for a party at sid but is not so funny now cause it's for real and like every single day for 2 months.
ALSO i'm looking forward to interlochen but at the same time i kinda don't want to leave home. like, at all. like i really feel like i haven't had enough time here, and now i'm leaving and i won't be back until semptember. and same thing with maine, it's such a priviledge but i'm almost like, enough already, if for no other reason than i'm running out of zanex and i can't hack this flying nonsense.
of course i have nothing to complain about. except maybe the fact the both shawn and jordan just imed me, and both times i had JUST STEPPED AWAY from my puter, like just missed them. AND judith hasn't called me, did i mention that? and i just know she's off frolicking with joann and forgetting all about me. meanwhile, this supposedly good piece of literature that catherine recommended is little more than lesbian porn and is accordingly mildly disturbing to my innocent little mind. or something.
life goes on, i've found.

it's strange how someone can be entirely absent from your day to day life, and yet you still feel the necessity of their continued existence, if only far in the background. and i've heard that it takes losing someone to trully appreciate them, but i'd never experienced that for myself. this kind of regret, of losing someone unexpectedly that you didn't really appreciate. now all i can remember is what a good friend she was, for so long, all the shared thoughts and dreams and fears. and i'd like to say that now i'll appreciate other people in the background of my life more. hopefully i will. but nothing can make this ok. ever.
